Joining tubing this size with a torch is a slow, heat-intensive operation that demands a nitrogen purge and, in most occupied buildings, a hot work permit. The 87023 replaces it with a mechanical connection: seat 1-9/16" of clean tube in each end, confirm with a tug, and the double O-ring and grip-ring stack holds at 870 psig with a 250°F continuous temperature rating.
Is a 7/8" Union Coupling the Right Fitting for Your Lineset?
Seven-eighths tubing shows up on large multi-zone ductless systems, VRF trunk lines, and commercial split equipment — rarely anywhere else. Before you order, measure the outside diameter with calipers rather than eyeballing it against a 3/4" line; the two sizes are close enough that stripping back insulation and guessing is how the wrong fitting ends up on the truck.
The 87023 also has the deepest seat in the family at 1-9/16" per side, so budget a little over three inches of straight, round, undamaged tubing at the splice point. Nothing gets tightened: the union is push-to-connect with no nut, so once both ends are seated to the mark and pass a tug test the joint is complete. On a line this size that makes cut quality the whole job — a square end, a thorough deburr inside and out, and an unscored sealing surface.

What is the largest lineset diameter the Pro-Fit system covers?
7/8" outside diameter, and the 87023 union is that size. Above 7/8" there is no Pro-Fit equivalent, so larger tubing still requires a conventional brazed or mechanical joint.
How much insertion depth does the 87023 require?
1-9/16" per side — the deepest seat of any Pro-Fit fitting. Leave a little over three inches of straight, round, deburred tubing at the splice so both ends can bottom out in the body.
Does the 870 psi rating still apply at 7/8"?
