RectorSeal 87021 Pro-Fit 5/8" Quick Connect Union Coupling, Push-to-Connect Refrigerant Fitting

Five-eighths is the workhorse suction diameter on 2- to 3-ton ductless and light commercial split equipment, and the RectorSeal 87021 joins it without a flame and without a wrench. It is also the largest fitting still covered by the small Pro-Fit support kit, which makes it a natural stocking size for a van that services both residential multi-zone and light commercial gear. Each side takes 1-5/16" of clean tube; the brass body, patented double O-ring stack, and stainless grip ring do the rest, holding at 870 psig with a 250°F continuous operating rating.

Is a 5/8" Union Coupling the Right Fitting for Your Lineset?

A 5/8" line is virtually always a suction line, commonly paired with a 3/8" liquid line on 24,000 to 36,000 BTU systems. It is also the largest diameter still covered by the small Pro-Fit support kit, which makes it a natural stocking size for a van that services both residential multi-zone and light commercial equipment.

Two things separate the 87021 from the smaller unions. The seat is deeper at 1-5/16" per side, an odd figure that is easy to mis-mark by eye, so use the depth gauge rather than a tape measure. And the tube itself is heavier — getting a square cut and a clean deburr on 5/8" stock takes a sharper cutter and more attention than 3/8" does. There is no nut and no tightening step, so a bad cut or a short insertion is the only way this joint fails.

Ideal for: Suction line repairs on 2- and 3-ton ductless systems, light commercial split linesets, multi-zone main runs feeding a branch box, lineset extensions during equipment changeouts, and splices in mechanical closets and attics where a torch would create a fire exposure.

Moving to large-diameter work? Step up to the RectorSeal 87022 Pro-Fit 3/4" Quick Connect Union Coupling, which also crosses over to the larger 87049 support kit.

Fitting selection is based on measured tube outside diameter and system operating conditions. Installation must be performed by an EPA 608-certified technician in accordance with RectorSeal's published instructions and applicable mechanical codes. Frequently Asked Questions

Which systems typically use a 5/8" suction line?

Two- and three-ton equipment, broadly — 24,000 to 36,000 BTU ductless systems and light commercial splits, usually paired with a 3/8" liquid line. Always verify by measuring the tube outside diameter rather than inferring it from system tonnage.

What is the insertion depth for the 87021, and does it need torquing?

1-5/16" of tube per side, and no — there is nothing to torque. The union has no nut. Push each end to the marked depth until the grip ring clamps, then pull firmly on the tube to confirm it seated.

Is the 5/8" union covered by the 87048 support kit or the 87049?

The 87048 kit, which spans 1/4" through 5/8". The 87021 is the largest fitting that kit covers; anything above it needs the 3/4"–7/8" kit instead.

Can I use the 87021 outdoors on an exposed lineset?

Yes. The brass body is UV and corrosion resistant and the fitting is built to tolerate vibration and pressure pulsation. Re-insulate the finished joint to control condensation on a cold suction line.

What happens if the tube isn't seated to the full depth?

The grip ring and O-rings will not land on their intended sealing surfaces, which is the most common cause of a leaking push-to-connect joint. Mark the 1-5/16" depth with the Pro-Fit gauge and confirm through the sight window before pressurizing.

Does the 87021 require a flare or swage on the tube end?

No. The tube end goes in straight — cut square, deburred inside and out, round, and unscored where the O-rings seat. No flare, no swage, no solder, and no flux are involved.
