1.5 Ton EcoTemp 14.3 SEER2 R454B Heat Pump Wall Mount Apartment/Condo Type System W5H5S18AKAAA, FMA5L1800AL
This is the smallest, simplest heat pump package in the EcoTemp multifamily lineup. It pairs the W5H5S18AKAAA single-stage R-454B heat pump with the FMA5L1800AL wall-hung fan coil and delivers 18,000 BTU of nominal heating and cooling at an AHRI-certified 14.3 SEER2 (AHRI #214423882). The fan coil hangs inside a standard closet wall, needs no ducted return in qualifying installs, and has an economical PSC blower motor. That makes it a practical replacement for property managers, condo owners and HVAC contractors servicing studio and small one-bedroom units.
Is a 1.5 Ton Heat Pump System the Right Size?
A 1.5 ton system suits a unit whose heating and cooling load is about 18,000 BTU per hour. That is usually a compact apartment or condo where one fan coil serves the whole living space. Choosing a small system for a small space keeps run cycles long enough to remove humidity. An oversized unit cools the air quickly but leaves it feeling damp and cycles on and off more often.
In a multifamily building, the load depends on whether the unit is a corner or interior unit, top floor or mid-building, plus window area, sun exposure, wall and ceiling insulation, and occupancy. Check your numbers with the BTU and tonnage sizing calculator before committing to this size.
Ideal for: Studio apartments, efficiency units, small one-bedroom condos, in-law suites and like-for-like replacement of older 1.5 ton wall-hung fan coil systems.
Need more capacity? Step up to the 2 Ton EcoTemp 14.5 SEER2 R454B Heat Pump Wall Mount System W5H5S24AKAAA, FMA5L2400AL for units with more square footage, more glass or more occupants.
Recommended system sizes are general guidelines only. Actual requirements depend on climate, insulation, unit location within the building, window exposure, occupancy, and installation conditions. Request free sizing assistance, contact Budget Heating, or call 813-885-7999.

Frequently Asked Questions
What size space is the 1.5 ton W5H5S18AKAAA / FMA5L1800AL system designed for?
It is rated at 18,000 BTU nominal, a common fit for studios, efficiency apartments and small one-bedroom condos. The right size depends on your unit's actual heating and cooling load. Corner units, top floors and large windows can push a small apartment past 1.5 tons.
Should I choose the FMA5L1800AL or the FMA5X1800AL fan coil with the W5H5S18AKAAA?
The FMA5L1800AL in this package uses a 3-speed PSC motor and is rated at 14.3 SEER2. The FMA5X1800AL version uses a 5-speed ECM motor and reaches 15.2 SEER2 with the same outdoor unit. Choose the PSC model to keep upfront cost down, or the ECM model for lower operating cost.
What line set size works with the 1.5 ton W5H5S18AKAAA heat pump?
The W5H5S18AKAAA has a 5/8" vapor valve and a 3/8" liquid line and is rated with a 5/8" vapor line. The spec sheet lists 1/2" and 5/8" as acceptable vapor sizes for this unit. The FMA5L1800AL fan coil has 3/4" suction and 3/8" liquid sweat connections. Follow the installation instructions for line sizing and any length adjustments.
Does the FMA5L1800AL fan coil need a ducted return?
Not always. The FMA5L1800AL is designed for non-ducted (free-air) return applications. It ships with a front return that can be converted to a bottom return. If you do use a ducted return, the installation instructions say airflow must still meet the unit's requirements.
Can the FMA5L1800AL be installed in an unconditioned attic or garage?
No. The fan coil is insulated for conditioned space only and is approved for upflow installation only. It belongs in an interior closet or wall cavity, with the W5H5S18AKAAA heat pump installed outdoors.
What kind of properties typically use a 1.5 ton wall-hung heat pump?
Apartment complexes, condo associations, student housing, senior living communities and small rental units. In these buildings a compact closet fan coil replaces an older system of the same size without reworking the closet.
