3 Ton EcoTemp R-454B Multi-Positional Cased Coil, W5AM36M17XA

The W5AM36M17XA is where the EcoTemp R-454B line moves to the tall cabinet. It holds the familiar 17-1/2 in. width but stretches to 29-3/4 in. high, and that extra four inches of casing is what buys the larger coil face behind a 3 ton rating. The result is 49.8 MBH gross at 1200 CFM, a 900 to 1500 CFM operating range, and the lowest air-side pressure drop of any 17-1/2 in. coil in the series. Factory R-454B TXV, dual sloped FRTP pans, 3/4 in. suction and the complete A2L dissipation package are all standard.

Is a 3 Ton Cased Coil the Right Size?

Three tons of nominal capacity covers a large share of mid-size and larger single-family homes, typically somewhere between 1,500 and 2,200 sq. ft. depending on envelope, orientation and climate zone. The 3617 coil is rated across 900 to 1500 CFM, with published capacity data at 900, 1200 and 1500 CFM, so there is genuine flexibility to tune airflow for either sensible capacity or humidity control.

The taller cabinet is the tradeoff. At 29-3/4 in. it needs meaningful vertical clearance above the furnace or below an attic roofline, and that is exactly the case where installers reach for the low-height W5AM37M17XA instead. Measure the vertical space and the plenum transition before committing. Then confirm the AHRI-certified match with the outdoor unit and verify the blower can move design airflow through the coil, the filter and the duct system without exceeding available static.

Ideal for: 1,500 to 2,200 sq. ft. single-family homes, 3 ton changeouts with adequate vertical clearance, two-story properties on a single system, and new construction where the mechanical closet was designed around a tall coil.

Need more capacity? Step up to the 3.5 Ton EcoTemp W5AM42M21XA Cased Coil, which keeps the 29-3/4 in. height and widens to a 21 in. cabinet with a 7/8 in. suction connection.

Recommended applications are general guidelines only. Actual coil selection depends on the AHRI-certified system match, blower capability, duct static, and local design conditions. Request free sizing assistance, contact Budget Heating, or call 813-885-7999.

Match it with the 3 ton EcoTemp W5A5S36AKAWA condenser or the W5H5S36AKAAA heat pump. If vertical clearance is the limiting factor, the low-height W5AM37M17XA covers the same 3 ton load in a 25-13/16 in. cabinet. For higher airflow applications, ICP lists the ACAWHNDIS01A alternate wire harness and relay kit as an accessory.

Specifications & Manuals

Size 3617 capacity tables run at 900, 1200 and 1500 CFM across saturated suction temperatures from 35°F to 55°F. The static pressure drop chart shows both dry and wet coil values, which is the data to check before designing to the top of the airflow range.

Frequently Asked Questions

How tall is the W5AM36M17XA, and will it clear a standard closet?

The cabinet is 29-3/4 in. tall and ships in a 30.5 in. carton. That is about 4 in. taller than the short-body coils in this line, so confirm clearance above the furnace or under the roofline before ordering.

What makes the 3617 different from the W5AM37M17XA?

Both are 3 ton, 17-1/2 in. wide coils rated 900 to 1500 CFM. The 3617 uses the tall 29-3/4 in. cabinet with a larger coil face and slightly higher rated capacity; the 3717 fits the same load into a 25-13/16 in. short body for height-restricted installs.

What is the rated cooling capacity of this coil?

49.8 MBH gross at 1200 CFM with 67°F entering wet bulb and a 45°F saturated suction temperature. Full data at 900, 1200 and 1500 CFM is in the technical specifications, with fan motor heat not deducted.

Can this 3 ton coil be paired with an EcoTemp heat pump?

Yes. The W5H5S36AKAAA 3 ton heat pump is the R-454B counterpart. Confirm the certified pairing in the AHRI directory before ordering either component.

Is the coil serviceable from the front of the cabinet?

Yes. A split delta plate gives quick access for cleaning, and once the door is removed the coil slides out the front with no tools required.

What refrigerant line connections does the 3617 use?

3/4 in. suction and 3/8 in. liquid, both sweat. Use a 1/2 psig nitrogen purge in the suction and out the liquid line while brazing, and heat-sink the TXV per the installation instructions.
