Mitsubishi HX Series 18,000 BTU Ductless Mini-Split Heat Pump System

The Mitsubishi HX 18,000 BTU system steps up to a larger indoor head and a taller outdoor cabinet, pairing the MUZ-HX18NL heat pump with the MSZ-HX18NL wall-mounted air handler. Rated at 20 SEER2 on R454B refrigerant and supplied with a wireless remote, this one-and-a-half-ton system delivers value-priced comfort to larger rooms and open living areas.

Is 18,000 BTU the Right Size?

At one and a half tons, an 18,000 BTU system is the entry point into large-room comfort. As a general guideline it fits spaces of roughly 700 to 1,000 square feet, providing 17,200 BTU/h of cooling and a strong 18,000 BTU/h of heating at 47°F — enough reach to condition a combined kitchen-and-living area from a single head.

Open floor plans, tall ceilings, and rooms with significant glass raise the real load, so confirm the layout before sizing. This is also the first HX size to use the taller outdoor cabinet and the larger 36-5/16" indoor head, worth planning for when choosing mounting locations.

Ideal for: great rooms, open kitchen/living combinations, large primary suites, and bonus rooms that need dependable comfort at a competitive price.

Need more capacity? Step up to the Mitsubishi HX 24,000 BTU mini-split system, step down to the 12,000 BTU HX system, or compare the GX 18,000 BTU system at 22.5 SEER2.

Recommended room sizes are general guidelines only. Actual requirements depend on insulation, ceiling height, sun exposure, climate, and room use. Request free sizing assistance, contact Budget Heating, or call 813-885-7999.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the 18,000 BTU outdoor unit taller than the smaller HX models?

The MUZ-HX18NL uses a taller 28-1/8" cabinet and a larger coil to support one-and-a-half-ton output. Allow extra vertical clearance compared with the 21-5/8"-tall HX09 and HX12 cabinets.

Does the HX18 ship with a remote?

Yes. The MSZ-HX18NL includes a wireless remote controller with batteries, plus an emergency operation switch on the unit itself.

What gas line size does the 18,000 BTU HX need?

It uses a 1/2" gas line paired with a 1/4" liquid line — larger than the 3/8" gas line on the HX09 and HX12 — with allowances up to 65 feet of length and a 40-foot height difference.

Is 18,000 BTU enough for an open kitchen and living room?

For a combined space up to roughly 1,000 square feet it usually is, given standard ceilings and reasonable insulation. Very open or heavily glazed layouts may call for the 24,000 BTU HX system.

How much moisture does the MSZ-HX18NL remove?

In Dry mode it removes up to about 3.4 pints per hour, supporting comfort in larger or humid rooms in addition to its cooling function.

How does the HX18 compare to the GX18?

The HX18 offers strong value at 20 SEER2, while the GX18 reaches 22.5 SEER2 and adds features like built-in Wi-Fi and POWERFUL mode at a higher price.
