Mitsubishi GX Series 12,000 BTU Ductless Mini-Split Heat Pump System
Built around the MUZ-GX12NL inverter condenser and the MSZ-GX12NL wall-mounted air handler, this one-ton Mitsubishi GX system brings ductless heating and cooling to medium-sized rooms. With 25.6 SEER2 efficiency, low-GWP R454B refrigerant, and an unusually wide capacity turndown, it is a versatile single-zone choice for living rooms, primary bedrooms, and finished basements.
Is 12,000 BTU the Right Size?
One ton of capacity is the most popular single-zone size because it fits so many everyday rooms. As a general guideline, a 12,000 BTU GX system is well matched to spaces of roughly 450 to 550 square feet, and its inverter can throttle all the way down to about 1,300 BTU/h — the widest turndown in the smaller GX models — so it stays comfortable even on mild days without short-cycling.
Because the same capacity can feel very different depending on ceiling height, glass area, and how the room is used, treat square footage as a first estimate. A tightly sealed modern bedroom and a drafty basement of equal size will not have the same load.
Ideal for: living rooms, primary bedrooms, finished basements, apartments, and open studio spaces that need dependable one-ton comfort.
Need more capacity? Move up to the Mitsubishi GX 15,000 BTU mini-split system, or scale back to the 9,000 BTU GX system for a compact single room.
Recommended room sizes are general guidelines only. Actual requirements depend on insulation, ceiling height, sun exposure, climate, and room use. Request free sizing assistance, contact Budget Heating, or call 813-885-7999.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a 12,000 BTU mini-split the same as one ton of cooling?
Yes. One ton of air conditioning equals 12,000 BTU/h, which is why the MUZ-GX12NL is often described as a one-ton system. It is the most common single-zone size for main living spaces.
What makes the GX12 different from the smaller GX09?
The GX12 adds about 3,000 BTU/h of cooling and 3,500 BTU/h of heating over the GX09 and modulates down to roughly 1,300 BTU/h for excellent part-load comfort, while trading a small amount of peak efficiency (25.6 vs. 28.4 SEER2).
Will one 12,000 BTU unit heat and cool a whole apartment?
It can handle an open studio or a single large room well, but a multi-room apartment with closed doors typically benefits from a unit per zone. Air from a single wall-mounted head does not travel well through hallways and doorways.
How much moisture does the MSZ-GX12NL remove?
In Dry mode the indoor unit removes up to about 2.5 pints of moisture per hour, which helps with humidity control in basements and coastal climates.
What size refrigerant lines does the GX12 require?
The system uses 1/4" liquid and 3/8" gas flared line sets, with a maximum total line length of 65 feet and up to a 40-foot height difference.
Does this system qualify as a heat pump for rebate programs?
The GX12 is a reverse-cycle inverter heat pump and is AHRI-certified (AHRI 216626285). Specific rebate eligibility varies by utility and program, so confirm current requirements with the administering agency.
