5 Ton GrandAire 16 SEER2 R454B Side Discharge Inverter Heat Pump System, W5H9V60AKAAA, WCVL605CD
This is the top of the GrandAire inverter lineup: the W5H9V60AKAAA 5 ton side discharge heat pump matched with the WCVL605CD variable speed air handler under AHRI 218160680. A twin-rotary inverter compressor delivers up to 64,500 BTU/h of heating and 11,400 to 56,300 BTU/h of cooling, and the air handler's 750-watt ECM blower moves up to 1,807 CFM. Rated 16 SEER2, 10 EER2, and 9.0 HSPF2 on R-454B, it's built for large homes and heavy loads. For the best experience, add the GrandAire WKJR120NX6W Smart Wi-Fi Communicating Wired Thermostat, our recommended controller. It communicates directly with both units and adds Wi-Fi access. Other 24V thermostats are compatible, but they don't support the communicating features. Compare more 5 ton heat pump systems with backup heat.
Is a 5 Ton Heat Pump System the Right Size?
Five tons is the largest residential split system size. It's normally reserved for large homes, open floor plans with vaulted ceilings, extensive glass, or homes in climates with heavy cooling or heating demand. Thanks to its wide inverter range, this system still runs efficiently on mild days instead of cycling on and off like an oversized single-stage unit.
Before choosing 5 tons, verify the load with Manual J and evaluate the ductwork. Delivering up to 1,807 CFM takes properly sized supply trunks and generous return air. Also confirm electrical service for the outdoor unit (MCA 40, MOP 40) and a 208/230V supply to the air handler if you add a heat strip.
Ideal for: Large single-family homes, open-concept and vaulted layouts, and high-demand properties that want maximum capacity from one matched inverter heat pump system.
Recommended control: The WKJR120NX6W Wi-Fi communicating thermostat unlocks the system's full communication. A 24V thermostat will work, but communication features are lost.
Need less capacity? Consider the 4 Ton GrandAire 16.5 SEER2 Inverter Heat Pump System, W5H9V48AKAAA, WCVL605CD, which uses the same air handler with a higher SEER2 rating.
Recommended applications are general guidelines only. Actual system requirements depend on insulation, climate, duct design, window area, and occupancy. Request free sizing assistance, contact Budget Heating, or call 813-885-7999.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I keep my existing 24V thermostat with the 5 ton system?
Yes, a third-party 24V thermostat will operate the system, but you lose the communicating features. For full performance and Wi-Fi control, we recommend the GrandAire WKJR120NX6W Smart Wi-Fi Communicating Wired Thermostat.
Is a 5 ton system too big for my home?
It might be. Only a Manual J load calculation can say for sure. The inverter compressor reduces the penalty of slight oversizing, but if your load is closer to 4 tons, the 4 ton GrandAire system is the better fit.
What ductwork does a 5 ton system require?
The WCVL605CD moves up to 1,807 CFM, so supply trunks, branch runs, and especially the return path must be sized for that airflow to keep noise and static pressure in check.
What add-ons can I order with the 5 ton system?
Options include a 10kW or 15kW breakered heat strip, a 25' or 50' 3/4" x 3/8" copper line set, a line flush kit, and the WKJR120NX6W Wi-Fi communicating thermostat.
Will this system run on 208V power in an apartment or commercial building?
Yes. The outdoor unit is rated for 208/230V single-phase, and the air handler accepts 115V or 208/230V. Heat strip output is lower on 208V than on 230V.
How many electrical circuits does the 5 ton system need?
Plan for a dedicated outdoor circuit (MCA 40, MOP 40) and a separate air handler circuit. If a heat strip is installed, the air handler circuit must be 208/230V and sized to the heater's nameplate.
