This 5 ton R-32 package is designed for the biggest residential loads: large single-family homes, open-concept layouts and hot-climate houses where a smaller system would run all day. Is a 5 Ton Heat Pump System the Right Size?
Five tons is the top of the typical residential range, so it should be chosen only when a load calculation shows about 60,000 BTU/h of heating or cooling demand. An oversized system cools the house quickly but removes less humidity, so a Manual J is especially important here. At this size, the ductwork must carry up to 2,000 CFM on high stage, and the electrical service has to support both the condenser and any large heat strip. The GLZT7CA6010 needs a 36.4 amp minimum circuit ampacity and 60 amp max overcurrent protection. It ships with a 198 oz R-32 charge and connects through 3/8" liquid and 1-1/8" suction sweat valves. With this condenser, the AMVT60DP1300's 1 HP variable-speed blower runs at its highest settings: 1,340 CFM on low stage and 2,000 CFM on high stage. Anchoring the outdoor unit with Goodman ABK-20 condenser tie-downs helps the installation meet 2024 Florida Building Code hurricane-wind requirements. When does a home actually need a 5 ton heat pump?
When a load calculation shows heating or cooling demand near 60,000 BTU/h. This is common in large homes, homes with vaulted ceilings or lots of glass, and homes in extreme climates. Don't size up to 5 tons based on square footage alone.
How is the 5 ton system different from the 4 ton GLZT7CA4810 system?
Both use the AMVT60DP1300 air handler, but the 5 ton runs it at 1,340/2,000 CFM instead of 1,072/1,600. The GLZT7CA6010 also needs a larger circuit (36.4 MCA, 60 amp max) and holds 198 oz of R-32 versus 229 oz in the 4 ton.
Can this system use a 25 kW heat strip?
Yes. The AMVT60DP1300 accepts the HKTSD25DA breakered kit, which is offered at checkout. At 208/240V, single-point wiring requires 117/134 MCA and 125/150 amp max overcurrent protection, so check your electrical service first.
Does the GLZT7CA6010 need anything special for very cold weather?
In 24V legacy mode, Goodman requires the OT18-60A outdoor thermostat for heat pump applications below 0°F with 50% or higher relative humidity. In communicating mode this function is built in. An FSK01A freeze protection kit is also listed as an accessory.
Is a hard-start kit available for the 5 ton heat pump?
Goodman lists the CSR-U-2 and CSR-U-3 hard-start kits as compatible accessories for the GLZT7CA6010. Your installer can tell you whether one is needed for your installation.
Will the GLZT7CA6010 fit on my existing condenser pad?
