Daikin 2MXM18AVJU9 — 1.5 Ton R-32 Two-Port Multi Zone Heat Pump Condenser

The Daikin 2MXM18AVJU9 is a 1.5 ton, two-port R-32 multi zone heat pump condenser rated 21 SEER2, 12 EER2, and 10 HSPF2, producing 17,200 BTU/h rated cooling and 18,500 BTU/h rated heating for two independently controlled zones. It is the easiest MXM condenser to install: 15.6 amps minimum circuit ampacity on a 20 amp breaker, a 3.3 pound factory charge, and 127 pounds of cabinet weight — light enough for a wall bracket where ground space is unavailable. This listing covers the outdoor unit only, with wall-mount heads, Daikin Vista ceiling cassettes, copper and wire kits, and the cassette wall controller selected below.

Is a 1.5 Ton Two-Zone Condenser the Right Size?

Two-zone systems solve the most common ductless problem: two rooms the existing HVAC never reaches. Think a primary bedroom plus a converted garage, an upstairs office paired with a bonus room, or a studio apartment split between living space and sleeping area. The 2MXM18AVJU9 fits combined design loads near 17,000 BTU, generally 600 to 1,000 square feet across two spaces, and allows up to 24,000 BTU of total connected indoor capacity so each room can be sized for its own peak.

Two constraints matter more on this condenser than on its larger siblings. First, total system piping is limited to 164 feet with 98.4 feet pre-charged from the factory — noticeably shorter than the 230 to 262 feet allowed on the three, four, and five port units, so long runs to a detached structure need checking before you order. Second, the largest indoor unit this system accepts is 15,000 BTU. Approved capacity pairings are listed explicitly in the Daikin MXM combination table, and a pairing absent from that list is not permitted even when the totals look fine.

Ideal for: Garage and attic conversions, primary bedroom plus office pairs, studio and one-bedroom apartments, guest cottages, sunrooms, small retail or reception spaces, and any job where the electrical panel has little headroom left.

Need a third zone? The Daikin 3MXM24AVJU9 three-zone condenser adds a port and 230 feet of piping capability at the same 21 SEER2 rating. Only conditioning one room? A single zone heat pump mini split is usually the cheaper path. Or compare the whole multi zone mini split heat pump range side by side.

Recommended zone counts and square footage ranges are general guidelines only. Actual requirements depend on insulation, glazing, ceiling height, infiltration, outdoor design temperature, simultaneous zone demand, and installed piping length. Electrical 208-230V, Single Phase, 60 Hz — 15.6 MCA, 20 A Max Fuse
Cabinet 29-1/2" H x 34-1/4" W x 12-5/8" D, 127 lb Net Weight

What ships is the 2MXM18AVJU9 outdoor unit, charged with R-32 and ready for two indoor units. Each zone needs its own line set, so a pre-flared copper and wire kit is offered per zone in 15, 25, and 50 foot lengths. Cassette zones also require the BRC1NRV71 wired wall controller from the options above. Because flare joints on R-32 systems are unforgiving, most installers keep Nylog Blue thread sealant on hand for the connections. At 127 lb this cabinet mounts easily on an adjustable outdoor wall bracket, or you can set it on any of our condenser pads and tie-downs. Add a weatherproof whip with pull-out disconnect for the service disconnect, and a 5/8 inch to 3/4 inch PVC drain adapter where the 5/8 inch drain ties into rigid pipe.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I buy this or two separate single-zone systems?

One outdoor unit means one refrigerant circuit, one electrical circuit, one wall penetration set, and one piece of equipment in the yard — which is why two-zone systems win on aesthetics, panel capacity, and install labor. Two single-zone systems can cost less in equipment and let each room fail independently, so they suit rooms far apart or added years apart. If both rooms are on the same side of the house, this condenser is usually the better answer.

Is 18,000 BTU really enough for two rooms?

18,000 BTU is the nominal 1.5 ton size; Daikin rates the unit at 17,200 BTU/h cooling and 18,500 BTU/h heating. Two rooms rarely peak simultaneously, which is why the system permits 24,000 BTU of connected indoor capacity against 17,200 of output. Size against a calculated load per room rather than square footage alone.

Why does zone one have fewer indoor unit choices than zone two?

The two ports are not identical in capacity handling, so Daikin's approved pairings limit what can hang on the first port. If your larger room needs the biggest available head, assign it to zone two. Call 813-885-7999 if the room you want to prioritize does not line up with the options shown and we will confirm a compliant arrangement.

Why is the piping limit shorter than on the larger MXM condensers?

Total system piping caps at 164 feet here, against 230 feet on the three and four port units and 262 feet on the five port. The smaller compressor and 3.3 pound charge simply cannot maintain proper oil return and pressure drop over longer runs. Pre-charged length is 98.4 feet; beyond that add 0.22 oz of R-32 per additional foot.

Can I add a third zone to this condenser later?

No. This is a two-port outdoor unit and cannot be expanded. If a third zone is even a possibility down the road, buy the three-port 3MXM24AVJU9 now and leave one port capped — replacing the condenser later costs far more than the difference today.

Can this be mounted on an exterior wall bracket instead of a ground pad?

Yes, and it is the best candidate in the MXM range for it at just 127 lb with a 12-5/8 inch deep cabinet. Wall mounting suits patios, balconies, zero-lot-line properties, and flood-prone areas. Confirm the bracket's rated capacity and that the wall structure can carry the load, and keep the manufacturer's airflow and service clearances.

Will this system need an electrical panel upgrade?

Usually not. Minimum circuit ampacity is 15.6 amps with a 20 amp maximum fuse or breaker — the smallest requirement of any MXM multi condenser. Many homes have room for a 20 amp two-pole circuit without touching the panel. Both indoor units are fed from the outdoor unit through the interconnecting wire, so no additional indoor circuits are needed.

Do I need the wall controller if only one of my two zones is a cassette?

Yes. One BRC1NRV71 covers the cassette zone; the wall-mount zone keeps its own built-in WiFi and wireless remote. You do not need a second controller for a single cassette, and one unit can serve up to 16 cassettes if the project ever grows.

Is this a cold-climate hyper-heat unit?

No. Daikin classifies the MXM as a standard-efficiency multi zone platform with a heating operating range of 5°F to 60°F. It performs well in mild and mixed climates but is not an extended-capacity cold-climate product. Where heating runs for long stretches near 5°F, or snow and icing are a factor, add the KEH063A4E drain pan heater and consider the factory snow hoods.
