The wider cabinet brings a 19-3/8 in. supply outlet and a 19-1/2 in. bottom inlet, which matters when the return trunk is already sized for a big system.
Is a 90K BTU Gas Furnace the Right Size?
The heating side of this furnace is identical in capacity to the 17-1/2 in. 90K model, serving larger homes and colder design temperatures at 72,000 BTUH delivered. What changes is the air side: a 4 ton cooling rating and roughly 200 CFM more airflow at the same static pressure than the B-width unit, plus a wider cabinet that reduces the transition work when mating to a 21 in. coil case.
That makes the choice between 090B042 and 090C048 primarily a cooling-side decision. If the outdoor unit is 4 tons, the C-width furnace is the correct blower match and the B-width unit will be short on airflow. If the outdoor unit is 3.5 tons and the plenum is 17-1/2 in., the B-width furnace saves both money and sheet metal. Certified temperature rise here is 35°F to 65°F, with external static of 0.15 heating and 0.50 cooling.
Ideal for: 4 ton system matches, larger homes where cooling airflow drives the selection, 21 in. plenums and coil cases, and Sun Belt properties with a moderate heating load but a substantial cooling load.
