Mini Split Multi 5 Zone Gree 21 SEER2 Heat Pump R-32 Condenser, MUL42HP230V1R32AO
Five zones, one outdoor unit, and the longest reach in the Gree R-32 multi platform. The MUL42HP230V1R32AO is rated 42,000 BTU/h in both cooling at 95°F and heating at 47°F, with a maximum cooling output of 44,300 BTU/h and a maximum heating output of 54,592 BTU/h — nearly 30 percent of heating headroom above the nameplate. Piping extends to 328 feet of total combined line length with 82 feet to the furthest unit and 82 feet of elevation. It holds 40,000 BTU/h of heating at 17°F and 37,800 BTU/h at 5°F at 21 SEER2, 13.0 EER2, and 10.0 HSPF2. Every zone can be a Gree Livo wall-mount air handler or a Gree ceiling cassette with grille included, and every indoor unit arrives with its own wireless remote. Wi-Fi is factory installed and the full allowable combination table is on the submittal. Select your five indoor units below.
Designing a Five-Zone System
Five zones is a whole-house solution: three or four bedrooms plus a living area, or a home split across levels where each floor needs separate control. The 328 foot total piping allowance is what makes it practical — that is an average of roughly 65 feet per zone before you hit the combined limit, so indoor units can be distributed to the corners of a large plan from a single condenser location without running out of length.
At this scale the combination table stops being a formality and becomes the design document. Each of the five rooms gets its own load calculation against insulation, glazing area and orientation, ceiling height and volume, infiltration, occupancy, and internal gains — and then the whole set of five capacities has to appear as an approved configuration. With 54,592 BTU/h of maximum heating output there is genuine room to over-connect, but the table defines where that ends. Format follows the room: cassettes where the walls are committed or a dropped ceiling already exists, wall-mount heads everywhere else. Electrically the condenser runs on one two-pole 208-230V circuit at a 30 A minimum circuit ampacity with 35 A maximum overcurrent protection.
Ideal for: Three and four bedroom homes needing a living-area zone, multi-level houses with per-floor control, homes with no ductwork at all, small multi-family and duplex conversions, short-term rental properties where guests control their own rooms, and commercial suites with five separately occupied spaces.
Need more capacity or zones? This is the largest condenser in the Gree R-32 multi range — larger projects use a second multi-zone condenser or add dedicated single-zone systems. Browse the full range on our ductless mini split systems page.
Recommended applications are general guidelines only. Actual system requirements depend on insulation, glazing, ceiling height, ambient conditions, occupancy, and internal heat gain in each zone. AHRI certification 215218917 applies to this condenser. It holds 95.26 oz of R-32 with 0.2 oz added per foot beyond the pre-charge, measures 40-10/64 x 32-33/64 x 16-52/64 in. at 174.2 lb net, and runs at 59 dB(A). Rated current is 21.7 A cooling and 22.6 A heating. Cassette selections include the matching decorative grille — GREETF05 on the 9K, 12K and 18K, GREETF06 on the 24K — and each cassette carries an integral condensate pump for above-ceiling drainage.

Specifications & Manuals
The submittal carries an extensive allowable combination table covering two through five zone configurations — treat it as the design document for a project this size. The Gree Cassette document set covers ceiling opening dimensions, drainage, and service access for every CAS zone. The 174.2 lb condenser should sit on a rated condenser pad, wall mount or tie down.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is the 328 foot total line length divided among five zones?
It is a combined budget rather than a per-zone allowance. All five runs added together must stay within 328 feet, no single run may exceed 82 feet, and elevation difference is capped at 82 feet. That works out to roughly 65 feet per zone on average, so one long run to a distant room means keeping the others shorter.
What is the maximum indoor capacity I can connect to five zones?
Maximum system output is 44,300 BTU/h cooling and 54,592 BTU/h heating against a 42,000 BTU/h rating. The combination table on the submittal lists exactly which five-unit capacity mixes Gree approves within that envelope. A configuration outside the table leaves zones short on a design day.
Can I use ceiling cassettes in every zone?
Nothing on the condenser side prevents it, provided the combination fits the table. The practical limits are whether every room has an accessible ceiling with enough depth above it, and the ceiling opening requirements in the cassette documentation. A common compromise is cassettes in the living spaces and wall-mount heads in bedrooms.
Do guests or tenants get their own control in each room?
Yes — every indoor unit ships with its own wireless remote and holds its own setpoint and fan speed, whichever format that zone uses. The system-wide constraint is mode: all zones are in heating or all in cooling at any given time. Factory Wi-Fi also lets an owner set schedules or limits remotely.
How does one condenser serving five rooms compare on install cost?
One outdoor unit, one electrical circuit, one set of clearances, and one condenser pad instead of five. The offset is five individual runs, five penetrations or ceiling openings, and five condensate routes back to a single location, which is more labor than the equipment count suggests. On tight lots or where an HOA limits outdoor units, the multi-zone is often the only workable option.
Does adding a fifth zone change the electrical requirement?
No. This condenser lists the same 30 A minimum circuit ampacity and 35 A maximum overcurrent protection as the four-zone MUL36, on a single two-pole 208-230V circuit. All five indoor units are powered through the outdoor unit, so no additional branch circuits are needed.
