Why choose the 70K furnace over the 45K version on a 2 ton system?
Climate. The 45K version delivers 36,000 BTU/h of heat output, which suits mild southern winters where the furnace runs intermittently. This version delivers 54,000 BTU/h, giving the reserve needed when design temperatures fall into the teens or below. Cooling performance is identical between the two because the condenser and coil are the same, so the decision rests entirely on heating load.
How does a 66,000 BTU input furnace fit the same 14-3/16 inch cabinet as the 44,000 BTU model?
Cabinet width in the WFER series is driven primarily by blower and heat exchanger depth rather than input rating alone. The 070A model adds a third burner and a larger heat exchanger within the same A-size chassis, which is why both share the 14-3/16 inch width and near-identical blower ratings of 1,070 and 1,080 CFM. Above 66,000 BTU/h input, the series moves to the 17-1/2 inch B cabinet.
Will I need to change my existing vent pipe when replacing an older 80% furnace with this one?
The WFER070A036C is a Category I metal-vented appliance, the same classification as most older 80% AFUE furnaces, so existing metal flue and chimney connections are often reusable.
